What is 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten?

This FREE program is designed to encourage and reward reading with your little one. Reading to your child before entering school promotes early literacy skills  and cognitive development that help to set them up for academic and life-long success.

What is early literacy?

Early literacy are skills that children need before they start to learn to read and write. The stronger their early literacy skills, the easier it will be to learn reading and writing in the classroom.

"Early literacy development is vital to later academic success. Children with poor reading skills are more likely to repeat a grade, which too often sets the stage for a pattern of failure in school. Children not reading proficiently at grade 3 are four times more likely to drop out of high school." -Urban Child Institute

How does the program work?

Great question! It's easy!

  1. Start by getting your kiddo registered through the login on the right and fill out their profile.
  2. Once they are registered, stop by your library to grab some books!
  3. Read with your little one and then come back and log your books.
  4. Your child will get prizes as you head towards your final goal of 1,000 Books!

What counts as reading?

As long as you're reading out loud to your child, it counts! Everything from picture books, to singing, to the newspaper, to participating in library programs. Reading is reading and it is ALL beneficial for your growing child. Repeating the same books is welcomed and encouraged; pull out that bedtime favorite every time!
